Early Orthodontic Treatment (Ages 7 to 10)

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, Dr. Propp isn't necessarily looking to begin treatment, he's looking ahead. Early evaluation allows us to identify developing issues with jaw growth, bite alignment, and tooth spacing before they become more complex problems.

When early treatment is recommended, it's called Phase 1 treatment. The goal is to guide jaw development and create space for incoming permanent teeth, which can reduce or sometimes eliminate the need for more extensive treatment later.

Signs your child may benefit from an early evaluation:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing or snoring
  • Thumb sucking past age 5
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws that shift, pop, or are noticeably asymmetrical

Early evaluation is always complimentary at Propper Smiles, with no cost and no commitment to begin treatment.

Teen Orthodontics (Ages 11 to 17)

The teenage years are the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reason. Most permanent teeth have come in, the jaw is still developing, and treatment tends to move efficiently at this stage.

At Propper Smiles, we offer teens a full range of treatment options including Damon braces, Spark clear aligners, and Damon Clear, so they can choose what fits their lifestyle and comfort level. We know that confidence matters during these years, and we take that seriously.

Dr. Propp also uses Dental Monitoring for many teen patients, which means fewer missed school days for appointments while keeping treatment on track.

Adult Orthodontics

It's never too late to straighten your teeth. In fact, adults make up a significant and growing portion of orthodontic patients and for good reason. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reduce wear on enamel, and can make a real difference in how you carry yourself professionally and socially.

At Propper Smiles, we offer discreet, effective treatment options designed with adult lifestyles in mind. Spark clear aligners and Damon Clear brackets are both virtually invisible, so you can go through treatment without it defining your day-to-day life. And with Dental Monitoring, most adults find they can manage their treatment around a busy work schedule with minimal office visits.

Common reasons adults seek orthodontic treatment:

  • Teeth that have shifted after previous treatment
  • Never having had orthodontic care growing up
  • Preparing for cosmetic dental work such as veneers or implants
  • Addressing bite issues causing jaw pain or uneven wear
  • Simply wanting to feel more confident in their smile

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends age 7 for a first evaluation. Most children won't need treatment at that age, but it gives Dr. Propp a chance to monitor development and catch any issues early.

Is orthodontic treatment different for adults than for teens?

The mechanics are the same, but adult treatment sometimes takes slightly longer because the jaw is fully developed and bone density is higher. Dr. Propp will give you a realistic timeline based on your specific case.

Can adults get clear aligners instead of braces?

Absolutely. Spark clear aligners are one of our most popular options for adult patients. Dr. Propp will let you know at your consultation whether aligners are the right fit for your case.

What if my child isn't ready for treatment yet?

That's completely normal. Dr. Propp may simply recommend monitoring your child's development and checking back in at a later date. There's no obligation to begin treatment until the time is right.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We offer flexible financing options to make treatment accessible for every family. Our team will walk you through your insurance benefits and payment plan options before treatment begins.
